Another Day, Another Mix Closer To Perfection

Well, I've been messing with the mix on the (first of many, I hope) songs, and I've just about got it tweaked to perfection, this time with a Match EQ mastering plugin. Basically what Match EQ does is it analyzes an audio file and then figures out the peaks and valleys of the frequency range (hey — quit nodding off) and then it applies that as a equalization profile to your overall mix. For the source file, I chose Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" because I like the way the mix on that song sounds. Then I told the plugin to "Learn" the overall EQ levels of that song. Then, I turned it loose on my song's mix, and let it EQ the final mix down. Here is what I got:

Let The Revels Begin, Let The Fires Get Started

From time to time, I like to dig out my MIDI controller keyboard, and fire-up my favorite sequencer software, Logic Pro X, along with my favorite music notation software, Finale, and make some noise. Er, I mean, music. Yeah, that's right, music. YOU DIDN'T HEAR ME SAY "NOISE," OKAY? OKAY. Right, good. Glad we got that straightened out. Anyway. My biggest musical influence is probably the great Jim Steinman, followed closely by Danny Elfman. The rock music that I write is typically styled after Steinman's, in that it's of a small genre known as "Wagnerian Rock Opera." That is, it's larger than life, typically overwrought, and melodramatic . . . it's big, over-the-top, and stylized. I write music that's meant to leave a mark, if you know what I'm saying. Anyway, about two months ago I got it in my head that my novel, The Technowizard Guardians Of The Infinite Worlds Of Fandom, needed — of all things — a soundtrack. Now, yes, I know, books don't normally have soundtracks. Movies have soundtracks; TV shows have soundtracks. But books don't usually have them. Because books are movies you make in your mind, and usually, if your mind has a built-in composer (though most peoples' minds don't usually do this), it provides the soundtrack to the mental movie you make in your head while reading said book. But hey, I just gotta be different, right? So, I decided that the book needed a soundtrack. With actual songs and everything. Not songs that tied into the plot or anything . . . just songs that evoked the general mood, atmosphere, and idealism of the book, you see. Songs sort of "inspired by" the book, if you get my drift. So, I sat down with Finale and Logic Pro X, and wracked my little brain for melodies and tunes and ideas. This page is where I'll post the results of what I come up with for that project.

So far, I've come up with one song. Just one. I've almost got the mix where I want it. The drums could use some work, yes, and the mix sounds a little thick for my taste, but it's almost there. The only thing missing is vocals; I need to find a talented vocalist, preferably someone like a young Pat Benatar, with a rough, rock 'n roll sound to her voice, but with an operatic quality to her voice as well — she's got to be able to belt out those notes, and hit those high notes and really scream out the lyrics and lose her fucking mind when she does it — who can sing for me, be my Angel of Music. Yes, I'm casting myself as the horribly deformed vicious psychopath in this relationship. It's not healthy.

I'll be posting more here to let you know how it goes . . . But for now, give a listen to my first creation, entitled, "Fight On Forever Where Dreams Never DIe." It's nine minutes long (a doozy), and it has lyrics, which I've posted below. If you want to try and sing it, just follow along with the "operatic"-sounding vocal melody when it comes into the mix — you can't miss it.

Fight On Forever Where Dreams Never Die

Lyrics By William Andrew Hainline

There’s
Sexual fantasies, masquerade balls, and there’s
Cosplay and role-playing games; the
Passion of Vampires is callin’ out to you, the
Shadows are howlin’ your name . . .
Blinded by all the light
You run screaming in the night . . .

When the darkness
Falls all around you
And all the lonely tears you’ve cried
Go winding throughout time

When all the angels have abandoned
You and all your hope is gone
I’ll take a chance, take up your sword
Until the battle’s won

I’ll take a chance, take up your sword
Until the battle’s won!

Fighting a battle against the Mundane
We fight on forever in fantasy’s name
We fight with dreams and magic fire, we carry the flame
We fight on forever, in dark realms of—

Gods, heroes, wizards, and virtual dreams
Where dragons and vampires and lost boys run free
In all the worlds that we embrace we fly oh so high
We’ll fight on forever where dreams never die
We’ll fight on forever where dreams never die

They say you can’t run away forever
And that you have to grow up sometime
They say you can’t fix a broken heart with fairy tales
And that fantasy can’t bring you peace of mind

But baby I know a deadly secret
Where the grey-faces guard a door
They keep a mystical portal to Arcadia
Somewhere up in the back of the thirteenth floor

Just put your battle-scarred hand in my hand

and we’ll be hackin’ our paradigms
And we’ll be goin’ to a place where all our dreams
Are forever beyond all of space and time!

(solo/instrumental)

I’m
Searching the galaxy, looking for someone to
End all this heartache and pain;
Sometimes I don’t know if I’m even a human, I
Don’t wanna play in their game
Step sideways into a dream
The world is never what it seems…

When the darkness
Falls all around you
And all the lonely tears you’ve cried
Go winding throughout time

When all the angels have abandoned
You and all your hope is gone
I’ll take a chance, take up your sword
Until the battle’s won

I’ll take a chance, take up your sword
Until the battle’s won!

Fighting a battle against the Mundane
We fight on forever in fantasy’s name
We fight with dreams and magic fire, we carry the flame
We fight on forever, in dark realms of—

Gods, heroes, wizards, and virtual dreams
Where dragons and vampires and lost boys run free
In all the worlds that we embrace we fly oh so high
We’ll fight on forever where dreams never die
We’ll fight on forever in bright realms of—

Gods, heroes, wizards, and virtual dreams
Where dragons and vampires and lost boys run free
In all the worlds that we embrace we fly oh so high
We’ll fight on forever in bright realms of—

Gods and their heroes like me and like you
In worlds where adventures, and dreams all come through
In every world where we embrace I fly oh so high
I’ll fight on forever with you by my side!

Fighting forever where dreams never die!
